When Talking About It Isn't Enough: EMDR and Somatic Therapy for Anxiety and Depression

If you're an adult in New York State who can explain your anxiety in detail — where it came from, why it makes sense, what triggers it — and your body still reacts like the threat is happening right now, this is the work I do at Enodia Therapies.

That gap between understanding your anxiety and actually feeling different is exactly what somatic therapy and EMDR are built to close.

Why Insight Alone Doesn't Always Heal Anxiety or Depression

Anxiety and depression don't just live in your thoughts — they live in your nervous system. That's why you can know, logically, that you're safe, and still feel your chest tighten or your body shut down. Talk therapy is valuable, but it primarily engages the thinking brain. EMDR and somatic parts work engage the parts of the brain and body where the original distress actually got stored.

What Is EMDR, and How Does It Work?

EMDR uses bilateral stimulation (like guided eye movements) to help your brain reprocess distressing memories or experiences so they stop feeling so activating. It's widely researched for trauma, but also highly effective for anxiety, panic, and depressive patterns that trace back to earlier experiences — including spiritual or identity-related trauma that doesn't always fit neatly into a standard trauma narrative.

What Is Somatic Parts Work?

Somatic parts work (drawing from Internal Family Systems, or IFS) treats your mind as made up of different "parts" — an anxious part, a numb part, a part that keeps pushing you to achieve. Rather than trying to silence these parts, we get curious about what they're protecting you from, while tracking how each part shows up physically in your body.

How Therapy Can Help

For many clients — especially creative, sensitive, spiritual, or highly analytical people — combining EMDR, somatic IFS, and art therapy offers multiple doorways into healing: verbal, visual, and physical. If one modality doesn't fully reach a particular pattern, another often will.
